RIBA Excellence in Architecture – 2019 Stirling Prize Shortlist

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has recently announced the shortlist for its prestigious 2019 Stirling Prize.

This British prize is awarded for excellence in architecture and is named after the architect James Stirling. It is the highest profile architectural award in British culture making even being shortlisted a huge achievement.

The six projects shortlisted for 2019:

1.    Cork House, Berkshire

Matthew Barnett Howland with Dido Milne and Oliver Wilton.

Designed with immense attention to detail, Cork House is a structure of great ingenuity. Sited within the area of a Grade II Listed mill house dating back to the early nineteenth century, the Cork House beautifully reflects and respects the natural surroundings in form and construction.

2.    Goldsmith Street, Norwich

Mikhail Riches with Cathy Hawley

A major development of new council-owned energy efficient homes. One of the largest collections of Passivhaus homes constructed in the UK.

 

3.    London Bridge station, Southwark, London

Grimshaw Architects

London Bridge is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in Southwark, south-east London.

4.    The Macallan distillery and Visitor Experience, Moray, Scotland

Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners

Sitting at the heart of The Macallan Estate, just 400m from their existing distillery, the new distillery is a unique statement in architecture, construction and whisky making.

5.    Nevill Holt Opera, Leicestershire

Witherford Watson Mann Architects

Dubbed an ‘indisputable triumph’ by the Telegraph, ‘both beautifully detailed and elegantly functional, it radiates an intimate and characterful atmosphere even before a note of music has been heard.

6.    The Weston, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Yorkshire

Feilden Fowles

Built on a historic quarry site within the 18th-century Bretton Estate, the Centre comprises a restaurant (140m2), gallery space (125m2), public foyer (80m2) and shop (50m2).
